The Foods 11 class is pleased to kick off another semester of Castle Café!
Castle Café is proud to 1) deliver delicious meals to RSS students and staff AND 2) be proactively taking steps to ensure that our students are receiving the best nutrition possible.
In celebration of the launch of Canada’s NEW food guide, we have some exciting changes happening this semester.
We will phase out drink options at Castle Café. Elementary students will not longer have the option of ordering milk or juice. High school students will be able to order juice until our stock runs out. All students are invited and encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to Castle Café and we would be happy to fill your water bottle with water from our newly installed water filtration system! Finally, delicious tasting water at RSS! It’s the perfect opportunity to make water your drink of choice!
We will be reducing our offerings of sweets at Castle Café. In the past, we’ve offered a sweet or fruit option in each menu at Castle Café. In order to help our customers reduce their consumption of refined sugar, we will be limiting sweets to once per week and offer fruit twice per week.
We pledge to offer vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options more consistently. We recognize that our students have a variety of nutritional needs. Therefore we aim to meet these needs on a more consistent basis. Please note that in some cases, the vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free options may differ from the advertised menu.
*Please note that we cannot guarantee with 100% certainty that our menu items do not contain or have come into contact with WHEAT, EGGS, PEANUTS, TREE NUTS and MILK. Therefore, if your child has a severe allergy or food sensitivity, please speak with us before ordering.

2) Have you had the chance to check our the NEW Canada Food Guide? If not, we encourage you to check it out! In the meantime, here are some highlights:
- The guide does away with the traditional 4 food groups and portions, which in our opinion is much more inclusive of diverse nutritional needs
- It encourages Canadians to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables to half of their food intake.
- It encourages Canadians to reduce their consumption of meat and dairy and to put greater focus on plant based proteins.
- It encourages Canadians to reduce their consumption of grain products and to choose whole grain foods.
- It encourages Canadians to make water their drink of choice.
Additionally, it encourages us all to:
- Be mindful of our eating habits
- Cook more often at home
- Take the time to enjoy our food
- Eat with others
- Use food labels
- Limit foods high in sodium, sugars or saturated fat
- Be aware of food marketing
What is particularly refreshing is that this edition of the food guide is based on sound nutritional advice rather than pressure from the food industry. It’s a food guide that puts health before profits!
