New Year, New Changes at Castle Café

The Foods 11 class is pleased to kick off another semester of Castle Café!

Castle Café is proud to 1) deliver delicious meals to RSS students and staff AND 2) be proactively taking steps to ensure that our students are receiving the best nutrition possible.

In celebration of the launch of Canada’s NEW food guide, we have some exciting changes happening this semester.

We will phase out drink options at Castle Café. Elementary students will not longer have the option of ordering milk or juice. High school students will be able to order juice until our stock runs out. All students are invited and encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to Castle Café and we would be happy to fill your water bottle with water from our newly installed water filtration system! Finally, delicious tasting water at RSS! It’s the perfect opportunity to make water your drink of choice!

We will be reducing our offerings of sweets at Castle Café. In the past, we’ve offered a sweet or fruit option in each menu at Castle Café. In order to help our customers reduce their consumption of refined sugar, we will be limiting sweets to once per week and offer fruit twice per week.

We pledge to offer vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options more consistently. We recognize that our students have a variety of nutritional needs. Therefore we aim to meet these needs on a more consistent basis. Please note that in some cases, the vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free options may differ from the advertised menu.

*Please note that we cannot guarantee with 100% certainty that our menu items do not contain or have come into contact with WHEAT, EGGS, PEANUTS, TREE NUTS and MILK. Therefore, if your child has a severe allergy or food sensitivity, please speak with us before ordering.

Questions For You:

1) Have you updated your account recently? Please check to make sure your child’s customer profile is up to date and includes information regarding any specific nutritional needs.

2) Have you had the chance to check our the NEW Canada Food Guide? If not, we encourage you to check it out! In the meantime, here are some highlights:
  • The guide does away with the traditional 4 food groups and portions, which in our opinion is much more inclusive of diverse nutritional needs
  • It encourages Canadians to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables to half of their food intake.
  • It encourages Canadians to reduce their consumption of meat and dairy and to put greater focus on plant based proteins.
  • It encourages Canadians to reduce their consumption of grain products and to choose whole grain foods.
  • It encourages Canadians to make water their drink of choice.
Additionally, it encourages us all to:
  • Be mindful of our eating habits
  • Cook more often at home
  • Take the time to enjoy our food
  • Eat with others
  • Use food labels
  • Limit foods high in sodium, sugars or saturated fat
  • Be aware of food marketing
What is particularly refreshing is that this edition of the food guide is based on sound nutritional advice rather than pressure from the food industry. It’s a food guide that puts health before profits!

And.... We're back!

Thank you to our dedicated clientele for your patience as we've been getting organized for Semester 2. Castle Café is ready to open its doors on Tuesday, March 13th!

It has already been a very busy semester with many exciting opportunities for our students including TH's Myth & Medium conference on Food, Culture & Identity. Robert Service School also hosted the Skills Yukon Territorial Cooking AND Baking competition with RSS students bringing home the gold in both categories. The winners will be travelling to Edmonton in June to compete in the National Skills competition. We have also launched a project called Sucseed, which is a hydroponic operation which allows us to grow fresh lettuce and herbs right in the Home Ec. room that will eventually be served at Castle Café!

As for Castle Café, our menu is posted and you are now able to order up to the end of the school year. Our last day will be May 15th. This semester will look slightly different. Due to a very small class size, Castle Café will open regularly on Tuesdays & Thursdays. As in the past, we do have other closures due to various school activities.

Thank you for your support!

Welcome to December 2017

Hard to believe another year is almost up! We are also closing in on another semester here at Castle Café.

Our December/January menu is now available on the website for pre-ordering.

Please bear in mind that December is a very busy month with lots of activities happening in the school, which will affect our openings.

The Heritage Fair is happening on Thursday, December 7th. As part of this event, Castle Café is offering a free lunch to all students, staff and interested parents on that day. Pre-ordering is not necessary. The menu includes Moose Stew, Bannock and desserts from around the world. Please note, no drinks will be served.

Our last day of Castle Café before Christmas holidays will be Thursday, December 14th.

In January, we will only be open Thursdays & Fridays for the first two weeks of the month and then closed for the rest of the first semester. The Foods 11/12 class will then be taking over Castle Café for the second semester and will open mid-February. Stay tuned for details!

We would like to thank Kaminak mine for their generous donation of food!

We also still have a good selection of Level Ground coffee, tea & rice available for purchase at the school. Funds raised from these sales benefit our breakfast program, Food for Learning and various school clubs. Please support us! We will also be selling our products at the Heritage Fair and Christmas concert. They make great Christmas presents!
